The Centrotec Chuck

Aside from being a quick-change chuck, the Festool Centrotec Chuck is the heart of an incredibly light and high-precision drilling system. It is one of a number of Festool's FastFix chucks.

The image below shows how it works...

  • There is a close fit between the ID of the chuck and the OD of the output shaft of the drill, while the FastFix mechanism grabs the annular groove in the output shaft to hold the chuck tightly to the drill.
  • There is also a close fit between the OD of the bit and the ID of the chuck, while the Centrotec mechanism grabs the annular groove in the shaft of the bit to hold the bit tightly to the chuck.
  • Additionally, there is an external hex at the base of the bit that closely engages in an internal hex in the end of the output shaft of the drill.

This clever combination allows for:

  • Quick changing of bits,
  • Extremely close axial alignment of bit and output shaft of drill to reduce runout, and
  • Serious torque transfer between drill and bit.

The widest use of the Festool Centrotec Chuck is to drill and to drive fasteners.

The image below shows and example of:

Another common way to drive fasteners using the Centrotec system, (aside from the Centrotec drive bits), is using a Centrotec bit Adapter. The image below shows:

  • Centrotec Magnetic Bit Extension, BV 150 CE
  • Centrotec Magnetic Bit Holder, BH 60 CE
  • Centrotec Locking Bit Holder, BHS 65
  • If you look closely at the image above, you will notice that it is three images that are spliced together. This is because the magnets in the magnetic bit holders are too strong to lay them anywhere close to each other without them gluing themselves to the holder next to them.

These three bit holders all accept the bits shown below. The Centrotec Locking Bit Holder, BHS 65, also locks onto the bits below with arrows. The arrows indicate where they are "grabbed" by the bit holder. It also has a strong magnet to "suck in" the bit when the locking collar is pulled back to allow one-handed operation.

The following images show various configurations of Centrotec bits and bit holders.
