Introduction to OBD-II Introduction to OBD-II
OBD means On-Board Diagnostics. All vehicles sold in the United States since model year 1996 have OBD-II, the current industry standard for On-Board Diagnostics. These vehicles require a Diagnostic Trouble Code Scanner to retrieve the codes.

OBD-II Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's) are categorized by whether they refer to the Powertrain, the Body, the Chassis, or the Vehicle's Data Network.

The OBD-II Diagnostic Trouble Codes are five-character codes.

The first is alphabetical and refers to the system above:
P = Powertrain
B = Body
C = Chassis
U = Undefined, but has come to be used for vehicle data networks

The second is numeric and if it is 0, it is a standard or generic code. Others are manufacturer or vehicle specific codes.

The third character in the OBD-II Diagnostic Trouble Code sequence is for the vehicle subsystem to which the code refers:
1 = Emmision Management
2 = Injector Circuit
3 = Ignition or Misfire
4 = Emission Control
5 = Speed and Idle Control
6 = Computer and Output
7 = Transmission
8 = Transmission

The last two characters in OBD-II Diagnostic Trouble Codes are assigned to a particular problem in one of the above subsystems.

We have compiled 4 lists of the generic OBD-II Diagnostic Trouble Codes and included several of the manufacturer specific DTC's also. These can be used as a reference to get you started. These files are big, there are a lot of OBD-II Trouble Codes. Please be patient as they load.
